Kevin Beaumont 111 Posted July 23, 2019 Hi, I'm Kevin. I am currently the Security Operations Centre Manager at a company in Manchester. I started my career back in the late 90s, and was a founding member of the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles fan club, Laceby Village, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire division. I haven't not had a job since then thankfully, and I've had the pleasure to worth for four big companies doing big security, usually on a small budget. I love security, probably because it's the black and white TV era - it's new, it's not fully formed, there's a lot to learn and a lot to create as the industry isn't very mature still. It's also mildly terrifying because of those things. 9 Share this post Link to post

I like PHP though, I think it's pretty easy to pick up. It has a bad security reputation but you can harden it - e.g. here AppArmor is running on the webserver, and the PHP config disables unused and risky functions. 1 Share this post Link to post
Steve Dudley 1 Posted July 24, 2019 Hi all, I'm Steve(aka) Duds. I am currently a member of a Manchester Team in a Security Operations Centre. I started my career back in the early 80's around the time of the first Pc's IBM 286's in Liverpool. I know I'm old. 🙂 Worked most of that period in the North West as a field engineer for a 3rd party maintenance company repairing or refurbishing very old hard drive read/write heads and then having to re-align them. I have always enjoyed my work and mostly cut my teeth administering AV environments, Symantec, Kaspersky, and now Sophos for SME's. This was good a grounding for my current role in Security Ops in which I do all it takes to protect and defend. 1 Share this post Link to post
Chrissi Robertson 13 Posted July 24, 2019 Greetings all, I'm Chrissi, more commonly known as Froot or Frootware. I'm currently a Junior Software Engineer at a Portuguese software house called Critical Software (who I really really love!! If you follow me on twitter you've probably seen me expressing how nice they be...), and I've involved myself with the community around infosec for the last year or so. I'm currently in the Manchester area but will soon be making a b i g move to Southampton due to work - any tips and tricks and information about the area would be very useful! I'm interested in malware analysis and DFIR, as well as OSINT and social engineering. I keep planning and talking about an idea to do a "malware of the month" on my blog looking at (and breaking down) old malware samples, but that's waiting on me getting yet another laptop to build a separated malware lab. I'm working on a degree in Computer Science through the Open University as well. I'm also a moderator in The Many Hats Club Discord server and I adventured around to a lot of conferences last year, and I'm lucky enough to be able to adventure to a new one this year (bring on DEF CON!). I'm never particularly good at introducing myself so I hope this works 🤣 Share this post Link to post

Anne Turner 0 Posted July 25, 2019 (edited) Hi everyone, I'm Anne, and have somehow been making a living in this industry for the last 11 years (I'm still waiting to be identified as a fraud any day now). I sit more in the people, policy, education and risk space of security and when I describe what I do, I generally say that I am a translator between the technical teams and business teams. I did my infosec initiation in the Information Security team of a large mutual financial organisation, and from there moved into a large multi-national as a senior consultant specialising in security policies and standards, risk management, training and awareness. Poached from there to a small consultancy and then asked back again by my previous employer. I'm relatively quiet security-wise publicly; I have twitter which mentions infosec in my bio but mostly I talk mental health, cats and swimming...aside from that I am co-author and contributing editor to a relatively respected industry publication, and I once gave a talk at BSides London on their first ever rookie track. I haven't been brave enough to stand up and talk again since... Good to meet everyone here, and hope for many good chats! Edited July 25, 2019 by Anne T Share this post Link to post

I used to be an active MRT on UNITE Forums (BleepingComputer, Malwarebytes, GeeksToGo, etc.) but I'm currently on hiatus due to lack of free time. I like anything and everything InfoSec, with a focus on Blue Team stuff: AV, EDR, VS, SIEM, PAM, DFIR, etc. but I'm eternally conflicted by the desir to move over to the Red Team. (I guess I have MPGH and UnknownCheats to thank to). I am a mathematics undergraduate from Turkey, in Turkey. Been actively lurking in the field for 1-1.5 years now, actively started working on stuff around 6 months ago on my winter break. I am mostly interested in red if not purple teaming, malware analysis and OSINT (who doesn't want to be a professional stalker from their home, right?). I plan to go after OSCP if I ever find the money or the job to get me the money but for now I'll be focusing on educating myself. Alan Coo 9 Posted August 1, 2019 deep breath Hi everyone. I'm Alan, but you knew that cos it says so right there. <-- Like many UK geeks around my age I started messing with computers circa 1983 with the humble ZX Spectrum, and a couple of decades later I've clearly come a long way as I'm currently waiting for a shiny new ZX Spectrum Next to arrive. I've spent the intervening years taking things to bits to see how they work and occasionally putting them back together again. My early hac- uh, exploring of computers other than my own was on PR1ME minicomputers (if anyone remembers those?) at college / university in the late 80s / early 90s. After uni I landed a job in Tech Support, thus being dragged kicking and screaming into the PC world, and I've spent a good chunk of my adult life in and around various support / Wintel Sysadmin type roles ever since. I've also dabbled with webdev back when editor of choice was Notepad, done bits of coding, and had brief stints in management a couple of times (with hilarious consequences). I moved into security earlier this year and am now an SME for a largish telecoms / managed services / cloud provider company. I've spent most of my time in this role so far attempting to get my skill set back up to something vaguely approaching current (if you need an Exchange 2003 server fixing, I'm your guy), attending cons and generally suffering very badly from Impostor Syndrome. It's dark and there are wolves. When I'm not pushing buttons I'm a moderator on a mountain biking website [uh, Alan, that's still pushing buttons...], nurturing an escape room obsession and playing (OK, buying) board games. I'm also aspie, so if I write something that can be taken one of two ways and one of those ways upsets or offends you, I probably meant the other one. Probably. (-: Cheers for reading, Alan. 1 Share this post Link to post

Mike Devens 0 Posted August 7, 2019 (edited) Mike here, I run operations for a US-based MSSP and have been doing so for about 18 months now. My current project involves building out a dedicated threat hunting team within the organization which has been a very educational task. Our company is always looking to hire and have multiple positions open, including entry-level. If you're interested, shoot me a message! Ryne Hanson 0 Posted August 8, 2019 Hey everyone! I am currently a penetration tester and security consultant working full time at Security Innovation and part time for Open Security (not this website, but cool coincidence). Have been in the InfoSec some time now after getting my start in the US Air Force. Right now I am doing a lot of focus on mastering DevOps principles and trying to build security into business processes as early as possible. Looking forward to talking to all of you. And big thanks to @Kevin Beaumont for setting up what will hopefully continue to be a great community. Share this post Link to post

Jack Glazko 0 Posted August 8, 2019 Hello all, good to be here and thanks Kevin for dreaming this up! I'm an information security analyst near Detroit for a German Tier 1 automotive supplier, still planning for what's next. I got into infosec after writing a few internet server applications in the 1990s and watching people try to hack into them. Amazing how much has changed since then (and how much hasn't). Zoë Rose 4 Posted August 17, 2019 Hi fam I’m Zoë and I work at a global consultancy, where I think my job is to create powerpoints? I got into security due to personal safety and a lack of understanding of people - but stayed because I loved it. I did a talk on it, if you want to hear at Aruba’s Atmosphere H.E.R. Tom wrote a bloody beautiful article on me where it’s linked: https://gestaltit.com/exclusive/tom/yellow-capes-and-safe-escapes-the-journey-of-zoe-rose/ (not crying, you’re crying) My goal has always been to be the person I needed 10 years ago - which I hope I believe I have since fulfilled. I live and work in London, but travel quite a bit to share the CYBERZ. My crowning achievement is being the mum of hacker ferrets - 7, Bit, and Byte. I also practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I’m a 1 stripe white belt (so don’t be too scared). My focus is a small topic.. Privacy and Security by Design - you know, nothing major or challenging... and I’m a ginger, so extra exciting 👩🏻🦰 In all seriousness however, please do reach out if you want to chat, cyberz, health, ferrets, BJJ, etc. I’m here ❤️ Słucham On 8/3/2019 at 12:50 AM, Jordan Lou said: Hi all, I'm Jordan, based in Malaysia. Currently, working as a SOC expert in a pharmaceutical organization. Have been doing threat intelligence, threat hunting threat analyst for the past 7 years. 🙂 Oh awesome, hey Jordan! I’ve had the privilege to speak in Kuala Lumpur - three times I think? It’s absolutely gorgeous! Not sure if you’re near/if I’ll be returning any time soon, but I’ll have to ping if I am and we can have a random OS.G meet up. 🤓 2 Share this post Link to post
Amanda Berlin 3 Posted August 21, 2019 Hey Everyone 🙂 I do lots of things. Currently a Sr. Security Analyst for a startup called Blumira (blumira.com) in Ann Arbor. We're crazily writing a SEIM from the ground up and I write a bunch of detections based on attack paths. I'm also the CEO of Mental Health Hackers (mentalhealthhackers.org) working to break the stigma of mental health issues and help those in our community. Co-Author of the Defensive Security Handbook through O'Reilly and I co-host the Brakeing Down Security podcast (brakeingsecurity.com). Single mom of 3 boys living in the middle of nowhere Ohio. Love traveling and learning. @infosystir on twitter too 2 Share this post Link to post
Sean Wright 2 Posted August 25, 2019 Hey Everyone. Really excited to give this a go 😀 I used to be a technical lead on our application security team. But my role is changing in more hands on testing and breaking things. I've primarily been focused on web app security, but trying to expand my knowledge out. Also attempt to do my own personal research when I have some time. Oh and a member of the The Beer Farmers. Share this post Link to post
Michael D 11 Posted August 26, 2019 (edited) Been in IT/security since 2002. Few years tech support/desktop support, many years sysadmin. Been involved in security both on personal time as well as within day-job duties since then as well. I have deep interests in both red and blue sides (and even dfir). I love being hands-on-keyboard technical, but also don't mind discussing security at higher levels or managing projects. Full time, life-long learner. I tend to gravitate a bit to the things I haven't done yet (so lately it's cloud-based security) or want to get even better with (appsecdev). Do some video games, tabletop games, and D&D on the side. OSCP a few years ago; CISSP many years ago. I bounce around. 🙂 <--Find me on Twitter there. Find me on LinkedIn if you feel like giving that a go (it's not too hard). Edited to add: Iowa, US. Ryan Littlefield 0 Posted August 28, 2019 Hello everyone I am a security & threat intelligence analyst that dabbles in research for a managed service provider based in London/Cheltenham. My favourite work is researching APT groups 😀. I used to work in software development, but I've always been a terrible programmer and security's twinkly eye ended up capturing my heart. I have a massive passion for computer science & DFIR in general and often write stuff on my blog https://littlefield.co. Glad to be here! Ryan Share this post Link to post

James Litt 0 Posted September 2, 2019 Hello, bit late with the introductions but here we go..... My name is James and I'm the Vulnerability manager for a large retailer in Manchester (who would have though). I've been working in security for nearly 10 years now covering both technical and GRC sides and in the last few years I've been lucky enough to achieve the likes of CISSP and CISM, so now I'm going to try my hand properly at pen testing :) Been following the forum since it started and now going to try and take part a bit more in the discussions. When I'm not working or doing security stuff I am mostly chasing after my 4 year old and watching Everton lose. Share this post Link to post

Dave Ockwell-Jenner 0 Posted January 21, 2020 Hi! I'm Dave Ockwell-Jenner, VP of Information Security for Arctic Wolf - the coolest sounding security service provider you've ever heard of! I'm based on Waterloo, Ontario, Canada but actually hail from the UK. I'm on a mission to share British-isms with my Canadian colleagues. When I'm not InfoSec'ing, I'm also a house music DJ and co-founder of a small business networking organization. Share this post Link to post
Martijn Grooten 0 Posted January 22, 2020 Oh hi. I'm Martijn. I posted once or so and then I forgot about this thing. I used to be Editor of Virus Bulletin from which I stepped down at the end of 2019. I'm currently having a very short break and looking for new opportunities. I like to consider myself a security generalist with a mix of technical and non-technical experience. Share this post Link to post
Sebastian Nerz 0 Posted January 22, 2020 Hi, I'm Sebastian, an IT-security consultant (really incident responder / digital forensic specialist) from southern Germany, working in a consulting company. Nowadays I'm spending more time as manager and ISO inside of said company as with clients 😉 My speciality ... incident response management and preparing companies for their very first (or, more common, second) IT-security crisis. Crisis management, BCM, incident management, setting up incident detection, stuff like that. Share this post Link to post
Jim Noons 1 Posted January 23, 2020 Hi, I’m Jim InfoSec Manager for a university by day and an InfoSec Consultant for non-profit orgs (and others doing positive social change work) by night. Those doing good work often have few resources, hence having a straight InfoSec day job. I’ve been a pen-tester, red teamer, SOC analyst and vuln manager. These days gruelling GRC is unavoidable (send help!). Highlight: Managing project to protect whistle blowers and exfiltrate data that the International Criminal Court is currently using to prosecute hideous war crimes. Lowlight: Having to order the retirement of a public facing server that hadn’t been update for 30 years. Yes. 30. Years. Share this post Link to post
